Thank you for taking the time to read our summer newsletter! Sadly, since I last wrote, the Covid situation in India and Nepal has worsened considerably, as I am sure you have heard, and Mondo supported schools in both countries are back in lockdown. We are trying to find the best way to respond to this situation while keeping our own staff safe. In India we are supporting our schools to survive this latest lockdown, again providing a hardship fund...
Welcome to our first 2021 newsletter! While Covid continues to affect all our programmes, we are so grateful for your support which allows us to continue working with those who need us most – and things are slowly becoming easier. In Nepal, our schools in Helambu reopened in November and our Saathi teachers were back in the classroom at the first chance, helping the children to catch up on all they have missed. West Bengal is slower to lift the...
The 30 children in the pre-primary class at Satkanya school were delighted when they saw their new classroom refurbished by Mondo. The school was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake and two classrooms were rebuilt 3 years ago. However, before this support the classroom was bare of furniture and had a cold concrete floor. Now the children are enjoying a fully carpeted room with small desks and beautiful murals, as well as a great collection of books and toys. Ashmi Tamang,...
As we come to the end of the year, we wanted to give you an update of how our projects and communities are faring across Nepal, India and Tanzania. Nepal We are very happy that our five Saathi schools have reopened. Our teachers took part in a planning workshop during the Diwali holiday and then travelled back up the schools at the end of November. They are now helping their pupils readjust back into school life taking time to talk through all...
Welcome to Mondo’s autumn newsletter! This has not been the year any of us planned, and the communities we work with continue to suffer from the spread of Covid-19, now emerging in more rural areas of Nepal and India, as well as the considerable economic effects created by lock down. However, it is not all bad news and our great teams are working hard to ensure that Mondo can continue to make an impact even through these difficult times. As...
Six months since lock down measures were introduced in the UK and around the world, we wanted to give a brief overview of what is happening in with our programmes. While the level of infections and extent of lock down varies widely in our project areas, our local teams have done a fantastic job in finding ways to continue support to our communities, while mitigating against the spread of the virus. Here are a few examples of the activities taking...
Our Saathi teachers are currently in lock down in their homes but this hasn’t stopped them working hard. They have been developing short videos for each primary subject and posting these on facebook for the children to watch at home. They are also developing radio teaching for those who have no internet access. ...
This three months has been a challenging time for Mondo, as it has for so many charities, and we thank you for standing by us. While many of our staff and beneficiaries have been in lock down, we have tried to keep our essential activities going as the need in all our recipient countries is greater than ever. Our staff in India, Tanzania and Nepal have shown their dedication and ability to adapt as the situation changes day by day,...
While schools in the UK are struggling to provide stimulating and appropriate work for pupils during the lock down, spare a thought for schools in India and Nepal. Mondo supported schools in these countries have also been closed since late March – in fact our schools in India had barely reopened after the long Christmas holiday when lock down was imposed. Our pupils in these remote, mountainous areas have little access to IT and no reliable internet connection. Their parents are...
Mondo has been supporting women in Northern Tanzania since 2005 and we have already transformed the lives of over 1200 single mothers living with HIV. We provide women with small business grants of £120 together with initial training to help them plan a successful enterprise. Our experienced staff mentor the women on a regular basis, visiting them at work and helping them make the business a success. Our beneficiaries engage in many trades – running market stalls, hairdressers, cafes, making bricks,...
