After training as a chartered accountant in London, Martin worked in the city before taking on a VSO contract to manage a honey factory in Zambia for 2 years. After returning to London he moved to the charity sector where he has worked for the last 30 years.  He has been the finance director for several medium sized charities working mainly in international development and with children’s disability.  He was a trustee and the treasurer of Prisoners Abroad for 8 years before becoming a trustee of Mondo Foundation in 2025.
